Expedited Shipping Costs on eBay – Absurd

0

Yikes! It’s happened a few times, I’ve seen something on eBay, either a bid or Buy It Now that I am interested in getting and realized that shipping was beyond expensive, but absurd. Lately I’ve realized I need to take a good look at the shipping costs. True the costs have gone up a lot over the past few years, but some sellers are ridiculous.

Case in point — a fun cookie jar that I’ve never seen in person, was more than mildly interested in it. Price was under $100. but shipping was $58.50. Really? Today I looked at another piece, shipping was over $30. Shipping at most for these items would be maybe $20. and that’s stretching it. But $58. to ship a cookie jar? I didn’t even bother to ask the seller about sending it a different method, if that’s their mindset, I don’t want to even go there.

When I did “call” a seller on a piece a few months ago that was more for shipping than the purchase price, again listed as expedited shipping, he apologized and said he didn’t realize that was clicked in the listings. So perhaps this is an eBay thing, but I am not going to pay 100% over actual price for handling costs. No way.

Amazon Prime Increase — Okay with me!

0

I’ve heard folks are pretty unhappy about the Amazon Prime increases. Not me. Although I obviously would like to keep the fees the same, at $99. it’s still a bargain.

One added benefit that many don’t know about — you can add up to four household/family members to your Prime membership. They get the same two day shipping benefits, but do not get the video and library downloads.

I buy from Amazon all the time and with two day delivery, it’s just super convenient.  I know I’ll hear from those who like to buy local, so do I. But not when it takes half a day and driving across town in hopes of locating that special size or brand.

Here’s the letter received this morning . . .

Dear Barbara A. Crews,

We are writing to provide you advance notice that the price of your Prime membership will be increasing. The annual rate will be $99 when your membership renews on July 23, 2014.

Even as fuel and transportation costs have increased, the price of Prime has remained the same for nine years. Since 2005, the number of items eligible for unlimited free Two-Day Shipping has grown from one million to over 20 million. We also added unlimited access to over 40,000 movies and TV episodes with Prime Instant Video and a selection of over 500,000 books to borrow from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.

For more information about your Prime membership, visit our Prime membership page.

Sincerely,

The Amazon Prime Team

Speaking of Jars . . .

What famous artist also collects cookie jars and confesses to owning several hundred of them? Front and center in the picture of a few jars is the jar named after him!

Do you know? Check out the artist who is truly living the dream. . .

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, isn’t it?

0

Years ago when the Roerig’s cookie jar newsletter was being published, Keith Lytle had a few columns on ugly jars. People would send in pictures of their weirdest/ugliest/strangest cookie  jars and folks would get to pick the one that fits the title — Ugly Cookie Jar.

As any collector knows, no jar is really ugly and we all know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so this is strictly for fun. And the owners of these jars are the folks that submitted them via the Cookie Jar Net Facebook page. Some really are ugly, one is definitely x-rated and then there are a few that are simply different.

Now it’s your chance to pick the winner. We’ll be leaving the poll up for a month.

Celebrity Home Raiders?

0

Celebrity Home Raiders -the newest reality show features celebrities and their stuff. The show is  on the Lifetime channel and premieres on Thursday, March 6, 2014.

Julien’s Auctions visits the stars in their home, finds something memorable to sell and then it hits the auction block for charity.

While I’ll be especially interested to watch when favorite personalities are on and to see what their stuff sells for, the Gladys Kravitz in me wants to see what their house looks like. Especially Ice T and Coco!

  • March 6 – Gene Simmons and Ice T and Coco
  • March 13 – David Hasselhoff/Fran Drescher
  • March 20 – Rick Harrison
  • March 27 – David Cassidy
  • April 3 – Debbie Gibson
  • April 4 – Lance Bass

The one strike against with the show from the beginning  — it’s on Lifetime, the folks who also bring you the bully show Dance Moms.

Getting Ready for Garage Sales

0

It’s a little hard to think about getting ready to have a garage/yard sale when the temperature is 10 degrees and there is ice on the streets. Unless you have a heated garage, which I don’t!

In our corner of the world, it won’t be too long before it starts warming up (or so I’ve been told!) and the garage sale signs will be sprouting on lawns as prolific as the weeds of spring.

If you’re preparing for your first-ever garage sale, or if you’re an old pro — a few helpful hints are always welcome.

If we don’t net $500, we don’t consider it a successful sale, I can’t decide if that means we have too much junk or just know how to sell it all. We usually don’t sell clothing, unless it’s kids and baby stuff, it’s mostly stuff we are paring down or not collecting anymore.

Toys are always good sellers, as well as household items. Although I used to sell on eBay, it’s too much of a hassle if an item is going to sell for, e.g. under $25. I would rather sell something for $10. at a garage sale than deal with the packing, shipping and commission fees. Another option that has just started being popular over the past few years is joining a Facebook garage sale group. Follow the group’s rules, stay safe and list either individual items or your actual sale on Facebook.

My biggest hints are having it all on one day, having lots of help and no discounts until two hours before the sale closes.
