Glossary of Collecting Terms

  • Lunchtime Pottery
Often a familiar jar will be found, but with interesting and very different decorations. This could be hair on Shawnee Smiley or perhaps a bug painted on the jar. Or it could be a well-known color variation with loads of gold trim and paint.
These are assumed to be lunchtime jars. The pottery would let their employees add their own individual flair to a jar while taking their lunch break. Many times these jars would be seconds, a flaw or two that would not allow them to be sold through regular channels. Years later, these are the jars that skyrocket in value and are sought by collectors.
